More than 1000 senate ballots missing in wavering, but more than 300 remain
The Senate's Republican leadership on Thursday announced that more than 1000 Senate ballots had been missed but were being counted to the satisfaction of the office's technology division.
The problem appears to be related to a software flaw, though leadership had not specified exactly what happened.
"To solve this technical issue, the Senate will use the same software that processes ballot applications," said Senate Majority Leader Dean Heller, R-Nev., in a statement. "We cannot predict exactly when the software's software issue may be addressed or at what point it will be fixed."
Democrats had hoped to cast their votes in the remaining Senate races while the GOP-led Senate voted at times with some Democratic senators in line to defect, saying that was a failure of leadership to hold the party accountable. In a statement late Thursday, state Democratic chairwoman Patty Murray said there were still "too many votes" for Republicans to defect.
But the outcome of the votes could still give Republicans a massive advantage on November 6 in the Electoral College.
As of now, the Senate majority can take care of all 435 votes in the Senate if 50 Democrats defect to support the GOP. The Senate was supposed to be in a seven-seat margin of error, but the final count of ballots cast there Tuesday night showed the Democratic advantage was just one vote short of a one-vote swing.
In addition, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was not in line for defections in any of the Senate races.
Heller and Murray are expected to come forward with a list of the missing votes at a later date, possibly by June 10.
Earlier Thursday, the chairman of the electoral college, Robert G. Marshall Jr., announced that all Senate votes cast in the nation's capital on Tuesday night have been recounted by election officials. (For a detailed breakdown of how the recount process works, see this blog by the Washington Post's Wonkblog team.)
Meanwhile, in all of North Carolina, Democratic Senate candidate Roy Cooper had an early victory in a hotly contested Democratic state election, according to polls.
